Re-Entry
1. Introduction
The Re-Entry function allows you to automatically reopen a trade after it has been closed. You can use this to automate strategies that involve re-entering after a Stop Loss, Profit Target, or other Exit Conditions.
By default, Re-Entry is disabled and must be explicitly enabled in the Trade Template.
2. Enabling the Re-Entry Function
- In a Trade Template, you can enable the Use Re-Entry option.
- After activation, the Activated Conditions field appears, where you can select the Re-Entry trigger (see Chapter 3).
- Without activation, no automatic Re-Entry will occur.
3. Re-Entry Triggers
Under Activated Conditions, you define under which circumstances a re-entry should occur:
- Stop Loss: Re-Entry is triggered only if the trade was closed by a Stop Loss.
- Profit Target: Re-Entry occurs only if the profit target was reached.
- Exit Conditions: Re-Entry occurs if a defined Exit Condition (e.g., change in VIX) caused the trade to close.
- Early Exit: Re-Entry occurs if the trade was closed by an Early Exit.
- Multiple triggers: it's possible to select multiple triggers. In this case, the selected triggers are linked as an OR condition. If any of the selected closing conditions occur, Re-Entry is triggered.
4. Selecting the Template for Re-Entry
- By default, the current template is restarted. This means the same trade will be opened again after a selected closing condition occurs.
- Alternatively, you can select a different template to open a different Trade Template after closing (e.g., after a Bull Put Spread Stop, open a Bear Call Spread).
The following screenshot shows an example with different Trade Templates to choose from. All created Trade Templates are always visible and selectable. If you want to reopen the same trade (same Trade Template), select Current Template.
5. Re-Entry Options
In this chapter, we'll cover the remaining configuration options for the Re-Entry function:
- Delay (in minutes): specifies how long to wait after the trade closes before opening a new trade (e.g., 0 minutes = immediate re-entry, 10 minutes = wait 10 minutes after the triggering close).
- Maximum Re-Entries: defines how many re-entries should occur at most (e.g., 1x, 2x, 3x).
- Active on partially closed: specifies whether a partial close of the trade should trigger a Re-Entry.
- Example of a partial close: Iron Condor with 2 separate stops (one stop on the Call spread and one on the Put spread), where only one spread is stopped and the remaining spread remains active.
- Without selecting this option, Re-Entry only occurs when the trade is completely closed (in the Iron Condor example, Re-Entry would only be triggered when both stops have been executed).
Additionally, restrictions can be set regarding trading hours:
- Don't re-enter before X minutes after market open: specifies how many minutes after market open you must wait before Re-Entry is triggered. This prevents a trade from being triggered immediately at market open.
- Don't re-enter after X minutes before market close: specifies how many minutes before market close no Re-Entry should be triggered. This prevents a trade from being opened just before market close.
ATTENTION: Please remember that trade opening can take several seconds, or even minutes for special requirements. You should plan enough time buffer before market close to execute the trade without time pressure.
6. Practical Example
Below is an example configuration of Re-Entry:
Under Activated Conditions, 2 of 6 triggers are defined (Stop Loss and Profit Target). This means if the currently configured trade closes via Stop Loss or Profit Target, Re-Entry will be triggered.
The Re-Entry opens the currently configured trade (Current Template) immediately (with no delay).
However, only a maximum of one re-entry occurs. After Re-Entry opens the new trade once, no further Re-Entry will be triggered.
Since Active on partially closed is enabled, the trade will be reopened even on a partial close.
Additionally, it's ensured that no opening through Re-Entry is performed in the first 15 minutes after market start.
In addition, a new opening is prevented if the close occurs in the last 15 minutes of trading.
7. Re-Entry on expiration of the option (workaround)
The Re-Entry function only offers Stop Loss, Take Profit or Exit Conditions as triggers.
A Re-Entry after an option expires worthless is therefore not provided for.
There is a workaround you can use, though.
Simply set up a Strategy with a daily entry at the same time and enter 1 for Max. Open Trades. The Strategy then only ever holds one trade at a time and opens a new trade again after an expiration.
