Condition: MACD Indicator

Updated: June 10, 20262 min read

The "MACD" Condition allows you to create strategies based on the popular technical indicator "Moving Average Convergence Divergence". MACD combines two moving averages of different periods to identify trends and momentum changes. In addition to the MACD line, the MACD histogram can also be used in OptionsApp as an Entry and Exit trigger.

1. How it works in OptionsApp

In the Configurations section, you can create a new Entry or Exit Condition using the plus symbol. Selection works as usual from left to right:

  • First, select the Underlying to be checked (e.g., SPX, SPY, or another symbol).
  • Then select "MACD" as the Condition and you can specifically choose between: MACD (Line)MACD (Histogram) distinguish.
    • MACD (Line)
    • MACD (Histogram)
      distinguish.

2. Calculation

The calculation of MACD in OptionsApp is based on two moving averages:

  • MACD Line = Difference between a fast and a slow moving average (e.g., EMA12 and EMA26)
  • Signal Line = Smoothed average of the MACD line (e.g., EMA9)
  • Histogram = Difference between MACD line and Signal line

These values are calculated regularly based on the price data of the selected Underlying.

3. Configurable Parameters

When selecting MACD in the Entry Condition, the following parameters can be individually configured:

  • Type: Select whether the MACD line, Signal line, or Histogram should be used as the trigger
  • Fast Length: Period for the fast moving average (default: 12)
  • Slow Length: Period for the slow moving average (default: 26)
  • Signal Length: Period for smoothing the Signal line (default: 9)
  • MA Type: Choose between EMA (Exponential Moving Average) and SMA (Simple Moving Average)
  • Operation: Comparison operator (e.g., greater than, less than)
  • Threshold: The comparison value being checked (e.g., MACD Histogram > 0)

4. Special Features

OptionsApp allows you to use each of the three components (Line, Signal line, Histogram) as an independent Entry Condition. The Histogram is particularly useful for crossovers (e.g., from negative to positive), while the MACD line and Signal line can be used more for trend confirmation.

5. Usage Examples

  • Example 1: MACD line rises above the Signal line Condition: MACD (Line) > MACD (Signal line) Goal: Entry at the beginning of an uptrend
    • Condition: MACD (Line) > MACD (Signal line)
    • Goal: Entry at the beginning of an uptrend
  • Example 2: Histogram transitions from negative to positive Condition: MACD (Histogram) > 0 Goal: Entry with positive momentum
    • Condition: MACD (Histogram) > 0
    • Goal: Entry with positive momentum
  • Example 3: Combination of two Conditions Condition: MACD (Line) > 0 and Histogram > 0 Goal: Only trade when both momentum and trend are positive Implementation: In OptionsApp, multiple Conditions can be combined in an Entry Condition (e.g., using AND logic).
    • Condition: MACD (Line) > 0 and Histogram > 0
    • Goal: Only trade when both momentum and trend are positive
    • Implementation: In OptionsApp, multiple Conditions can be combined in an Entry Condition (e.g., using AND logic).
