Telegram Commands: Check OptionsApp from Your Phone

Updated: October 4, 20264 min read

1. Overview

Once the Telegram bot is set up (see Create a Telegram Bot and Connect It to OptionsApp), the current state of OptionsApp can be checked from your phone at any time. Send a number from 1 to 7 to the connected Telegram group. The bot answers within a few seconds with the matching report.

The commands are read-only. Nothing in OptionsApp can be changed via Telegram: no trades are opened, closed or adjusted, and no setting is changed.

2. Commands at a glance

  • 1, Screenshot: current picture of OptionsApp
  • 2, Account Summary: key figures per account
  • 3, Trades Today: all of today's trades per strategy with status and result
  • 4, Today's Overview: daily result and the trades still scheduled
  • 5, Account Positions: all positions in the account, split into managed and not managed
  • 6, Unmanaged Positions: only the positions OptionsApp does not manage
  • 7, App Status: connection and health of OptionsApp

Any other message, for example "help" or "?", is answered with this list. The bot answers in English, like the OptionsApp interface.

3. The commands in detail

3.1 Command 1: Screenshot

The bot sends a screenshot of the current OptionsApp window. If the interface is busy, a short note is sent instead. The request can then be repeated a moment later.

3.2 Command 2: Account Summary

For every connected account the bot lists the main figures from TWS: Net liquidation, Cash, Unrealized P&L and Realized P&L, Cushion (buffer to the margin limit in percent), Excess liquidity, Buying power, and Init margin and Maint margin. Figures an account does not report are left out; Cushion, for example, only exists on margin accounts. Values are shown in the currency TWS reports them in.

3.3 Command 3: Trades Today

The report shows all trades that ran today, for options as well as stocks and ETFs. Scheduled and canceled trades are not included; command 4 shows the scheduled ones. Trades are grouped by strategy. Each line shows the trade name, its ID in square brackets and the profit or loss. If an order is only partially filled, the filled quantity follows. The day's result is shown at the top, and each strategy shows its own total.

A colored mark in front of each line shows the status: green running, orange partially stopped, blue processing, red stopped, purple closed, black expired. A warning sign marks a trade that OptionsApp no longer manages (unmanaged, see Unmanaged Trades). A legend below the report explains the marks used. If several accounts are connected, the account follows each line.

3.4 Command 4: Today's Overview

The overview counts the day's trades by status, shows the daily profit or loss (Daily P&L) and lists the trades still scheduled for today, with time and grouped by strategy. If the next scheduled trades belong to a later day, for example on a weekend, the overview names the weekday and date of that day. On a day without trades the bot briefly explains what the report contains on trading days.

3.5 Command 5: Account Positions

The bot lists all open positions of the connected accounts, per account in two blocks: Managed (managed by OptionsApp) and Unmanaged (not or only partly managed). If a position is only partly covered by OptionsApp trades, a line below shows which part is managed and which is not. At the end the bot lists the trades OptionsApp has handed over (status Unmanaged).

If the comparison with the positions in TWS is not complete yet, for example shortly after startup, the bot asks to repeat the request in a moment.

3.6 Command 6: Unmanaged Positions

This report matches command 5 but only shows the positions OptionsApp does not manage or only partly manages. It is a quick way to check from your phone whether the account holds anything OptionsApp does not monitor, for example after an intervention directly in TWS. If everything is covered, the bot says so explicitly.

3.7 Command 7: App Status

The bot reports the state of OptionsApp: version, connection to TWS (IBKR TWS), connection to market data (Market data farm), whether positions are up to date, the number of active strategies and of today's trades, and the uptime since OptionsApp was started. This shows whether OptionsApp is running and connected without going to the computer.

4. Important notes

  • The bot only answers while OptionsApp is running. If the computer is off or OptionsApp is closed, the request stays unanswered. OptionsApp does not process messages from that time after startup, so the request has to be sent again.
  • The bot only reacts in the group selected as Chat under Settings, Telegram Bot.
  • Requests are always answered, even if automatic notifications are switched off in the settings.
  • Very long reports, for example on days with many trades, are shortened at the end with a note on how many lines are missing. Telegram only accepts messages up to a certain length.
  • One bot belongs to exactly one OptionsApp. If two installations read the same bot, for example on two computers, the bot reports a conflict ("Telegram polling conflict") and commands may get lost. Create a separate bot for every additional computer.
