Error Message "Market Unknown"

Updated: April 26, 20251 min read

In your OptionsApp Dashboard, you'll find the market status display in the top right corner next to the trading day selection.
Normally, the current market status for the selected Underlying (e.g., SPX or SPY) should be displayed there.

However, if Market: Unknown is displayed, this means the following:

  • OptionsApp is currently unable to retrieve market data for the corresponding Underlying.
  • Without correct market data, planned Trades cannot be started or managed reliably.

Possible causes

  • No live data in TWS: Make sure you've subscribed to the required market data packages for your account and that they are active.
  • Issues with the TWS API connection:
Check whether your TWS (Trader Workstation) is properly connected to OptionsApp.
  • TWS instability:
An unstable TWS can result in market data not being provided correctly.
  • Paper Trading account without market data access:
Make sure that live data has also been enabled for your Paper account. To do this, you need to specify in the IB account management under Settings that live data should be shared with your Paper Trading account. CAUTION: If you share market data and then log into your Live account, you will revoke market data access from your Paper account.
  • Account access from another device: If you access the account without setting up a separate user, this can remove market data from the TWS Session that is connected to OptionsApp.

Solution steps

  • Perform a Reconnect of OptionsApp:
Click the Reconnect button in the connection window in OptionsApp (see screenshot). This will re-establish the connection to TWS.
  • Restart TWS and OptionsApp:
If the Reconnect doesn't help, completely close both TWS and OptionsApp and cleanly restart both programs.
