Position size of the contract does not match

Updated: September 11, 20252 min read

1. Root cause of the error

The Not-Matching error occurs when OptionsApp cannot reconcile an execution reported by Trader Workstation (TWS) with its own position data.
Common cause: OptionsApp was not active at the time of execution or did not receive the execution message from TWS.

Typical scenarios:

  • OptionsApp was not running when a position was closed.
  • The connection between OptionsApp and TWS was interrupted.
  • Actual error that requires careful investigation of the displayed positions

2. Workaround to fix the error

2.1 Automatically reload executions

In many cases, TWS did not actively load the executions from the IB servers and therefore could not provide them to OptionsApp via API.

To reload missing executions and fix the error, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Trade History window in TWS.
  2. In the Trade History, switch multiple times between different time periods (this forces TWS to correctly load executions from the IB servers).
  3. Then select the time period "Last 7 Days" in the Trade History.
  4. Leave the Trade History window open in the background.
  5. Perform a Reconnect in OptionsApp.
  6. OptionsApp will now automatically reload the executions from the last 7 days.
  7. In many cases, the Not-Matching error disappears after this procedure (provided the issue was a missing execution that could not be transferred).

Note: After successful synchronization, the Trade History window can be closed again.

2.2 Manually add missing executions

If the automatic reload of executions is unsuccessful, you can manually add the missing executions via the "Evaluations" tab.

If the trade is already closed in TWS but still shows status RUNNING in OptionsApp, you must first disable automatic trade monitoring. This means OptionsApp must first decouple from this trade so it no longer manages it. This will set the trade to STOPPED and can then be manually added via the "Evaluations" tab.

3. Further steps if the error persists

If the Not-Matching error continues:

  • Check which position is affected.
  • Compare whether the position is still active in TWS but no longer managed by OptionsApp (or vice versa).
  • The actual positions in TWS always take precedence. This means if a position exists in TWS that OptionsApp no longer reflects, there may be a risk.

One possible cause of this message is an order placed manually in the TWS on a contract that OptionsApp manages. See Manual Orders on Contracts Managed by OptionsApp.
